RESUMEN

Polystyrene microplastics, extensively considered endocrine disrupting chemicals, disturb the reproductive system of living organisms. Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), the reproductive endocrinopathy, is longstanding concern due to its eternal impacts as reproductive disorder and infertility. Despite several reports in reproductive and endocrine toxicity, there is inadequate literature regarding the daily intake of polystyrene-microplastics via drinking water in causing PCOS and leading to ovarian fibrosis in long-term. The present study investigated whether daily consumption of polystyrene-microplastics at doses equivalent to human exposure can cause PCOS and progress to ovarian fibrosis, using female zebrafish as model. Resembling letrozole-PCOS zebrafish model, daily intake of polystyrene-microplastics displayed hallmark PCOS pathophysiology; like excess body weight and %Gonadosomatic index, decreased Follicle Stimulating Hormone and ß-estradiol, increased Luteinising Hormone, brain and ovarian Testosterone (39.3% and 75% respectively). Correspondingly, ovarian histology revealed more developing (stage I and II) oocytes and less mature oocytes alongwith cystic lesions; like follicular membrane disorganization, zona pellucida invagination, theca hypertrophy, basophilic granular accumulation and oocyte buddings. Lipid deposition in intestinal and ovarian tissues was evidenced and increased fasting blood glucose manifesting insulin resistance. The expression of PCOS biomarkers (tox3, dennd1a, fem1a) was significantly disturbed. Polystyrene microplastics played vital role in inducing PCOS further enhancing oxidative stress, which positively influences inflammation and aggravate ovarian mitophagy, shedding light on its ability to harshen PCOS into ovarian fibrosis, which is characterized by collagen deposition and upregulation of pro-fibrogenic biomarker genes. These findings illustrate the potential of daily microplastics intake via drinking water in triggering PCOS and its progression to ovarian fibrosis.

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a clinically and genetically heterogeneous disorder. To reduce heterogeneity, large-scale genome-wide association studies have recently identified genome-wide significant loci associated with seven MDD subtypes. However, it was unclear in which tissues the genes near those loci are specifically expressed. We investigated whether genes related to specific MDD subtypes would be preferably expressed in a specific tissue. At 14 novel subtype-specific loci related to seven MDD subtypes-(1) non-atypical-like features MDD, (2) early-onset MDD, (3) recurrent MDD, (4) MDD with suicidal thoughts, (5) MDD without suicidal thoughts, (6) MDD with moderate impairment, and (7) postpartum depression, we investigated whether 22 genome-wide significant genetic variant-mapped genes were tissue-specifically expressed in brain, female reproductive, male specific, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, or urinary tissues in the Genotype-Tissue Expression (GTEx) subjects (n ≤ 948). To confirm the tissue-specific expression in the GTEx, we used independent Human Protein Atlas (HPA) RNA-seq subjects (n ≤ 95). Of 22 genes, nine and five genes were tissue-specifically expressed in brain and female reproductive tissues, respectively (p < 2.27 × 10-3). RTN1, ERBB4, and AMIGO1 related to early-onset MDD, recurrent MDD, or MDD with suicidal thoughts were highly expressed in brain tissues (d = 1.19-2.71), while OAS1, LRRC9, DHRS7, PSMA5, SYPL2, and GULP1 related to non-atypical-like features MDD, early-onset MDD, MDD with suicidal thoughts, or postpartum depression were expressed at low levels in brain tissues (d = -0.17--1.48). DFNA5, CTBP2, PCNX4, SDCCAG8, and GULP1, which are related to early-onset MDD, MDD with moderate impairment, or postpartum depression, were highly expressed in female reproductive tissues (d = 0.80-2.08). Brain and female reproductive tissue-specific expression was confirmed in the HPA RNA-seq subjects. Our findings suggest that brain and female reproductive tissue-specific expression might contribute to the pathogenesis of MDD subtypes.

In recent years, an increasing number of genes associated with male and female infertility have been identified. The genetics of infertility is no longer limited to the analysis of karyotypes or specific genes, and it is now possible to analyse several dozen infertility genes simultaneously. Here, we present the diagnostic activity over the past two years including 140 patients (63 women and 77 men). Targeted sequencing revealed causative variants in 17 patients, representing an overall diagnostic rate of 12.1%, with prevalence rates in females and males of 11% and 13%, respectively. The gene-disease relationship (GDR) was re-evaluated for genes due to the addition of new patients and/or variants in the actual study. Five genes changed categories: two female genes (MEIOB and TBPL2) moved from limited to moderate; two male genes (SOHLH1 and GALNTL5) moved from no evidence to strong and from limited to moderate; and SEPTIN12, which was unable to classify male infertility, was reclassified as limited. Many infertility genes have yet to be identified. With the increasing integration of genetics in reproductive medicine, the scope of intervention extends to include other family members, in addition to individual patients or couples. Genetic counselling consultations and appropriate staffing will need to be established in fertility centres. Trial registration number: Not applicable.

Female and latent genital tuberculosis (FGTB and LGTB) in young women may lead to infertility by damaging ovarian reserve function, but the regulatory mechanisms remain unclear. In this study, we investigated the effects of FGTB and LGTB on ovarian reserve function and potential regulatory mechanisms by untargeted metabolomics of follicular fluid, aiming to provide insights for the clinical management and treatment approaches for afflicted women. We recruited 19 patients with FGTB, 16 patients with LGTB, and 16 healthy women as a control group. Clinical data analysis revealed that both the FGTB and LGTB groups had significantly lower ovarian reserve marker levels compared to the control group, including lower anti-Müllerian hormone levels (FGTB: 0.82 [0.6, 1.1] µg/L; LGTB: 1.57 [1.3, 1.8] µg/L vs. control: 3.29 [2.9, 3.5] µg/L), reduced antral follicular counts (FGTB: 6 [5.5, 9.5]; LGTB: 10.5 [7, 12.3] vs. control: 17 [14.5, 18]), and fewer retrieved oocytes (FGTB: 3 [2, 5]; LGTB: 8 [4, 8.3] vs. control: 14.5 [11.5, 15.3]). Conversely, these groups exhibited higher ovarian response marker levels, such as longer gonadotropin treatment days (FGTB: 12 [10.5, 12.5]; LGTB: 11 [10.8, 11.3] vs. control: 10 [8.8, 10]) and increased gonadotropin dosage requirements (FGTB: 3300 [3075, 3637.5] U; LGTB: 3037.5 [2700, 3225] U vs. control: 2531.25 [2337.5, 2943.8] U). All comparisons were statistically significant at P < 0.05. The results suggested that FGTB and LGTB have adverse effects on ovarian reserve and response. Untargeted metabolomic analysis identified 92 and 80 differential metabolites in the control vs. FGTB and control vs. LGTB groups, respectively. Pathway enrichment analysis revealed significant alterations in metabolic pathways in the FGTB and LGTB groups compared to the control group (P < 0.05), with specific changes noted in galactose metabolism, biotin metabolism, steroid hormone biosynthesis, and nicotinate and nicotinamide metabolism in the FGTB group, and caffeine metabolism, primary bile acid biosynthesis, steroid hormone biosynthesis, and glycerophospholipid metabolism in the LGTB group. The analysis of metabolic levels has revealed the potential mechanisms by which FGTB and LGTB affect ovarian reserve function, namely through alterations in metabolic pathways. The study emphasizes the importance of comprehending the metabolic alterations associated with FGTB and LGTB, which is of considerable relevance for the clinical management and therapeutic approaches in afflicted women.

The effects of hypopressive exercise (HE) on dynamic balance have never been studied. We aimed to study the effects of a HE program on dynamic balance, posterior chain kinematics and expiratory peak flow on female competitive roller skaters over a 6-week training period. Twenty competitive female roller-skaters (13-22 years of age, SD 2.25) performed a 30-minute HE session once weekly before the regular roller-skating practice for 6 weeks. The HE program consisted of breathing and postural awareness exercises in addition to 5 basic HE poses performed three times each. Dynamic neuromuscular control was assessed with the Y-Balance Test (YBT), posterior back chain kinematics with the sit and reach test and peak expiratory flow rate with a digital spirometer. Paired t-test revealed significant differences between the measurement periods for all YBT leg directions and composite score (p ≤ 0.01). Significant differences were also revealed between baseline and after the intervention for the sit and reach test (p ≤ 0.01) and peak expiratory flow (p = 0.01). No differences in forced expiratory volume in the first second were found (p = 0.04). These preliminary findings suggest that a 6-week HE program could be a feasible neuromuscular option for training dynamic balance, posterior back chain kinematics and peak expiratory flow in female roller-skaters.

Choroidal melanoma with ciliary body involvement is rare, especially in young adults and Asians. Here, we report the case of a young, healthy Chinese woman who complained of decreased vision in the left eye for one week. Her ocular examination and imaging were suggestive of choroidal melanoma involving the ciliary body. The patient underwent enucleation of the left eye. Close monitoring was needed, as the involvement of the ciliary body in choroidal melanoma is associated with a high risk of metastasis.

Softball athletes require multiple fitness traits (e.g., strength, speed, power) and sport-specific skills (e.g., hitting, throwing) for success. Lower-body strength could underpin these qualities; this has received little analysis among high school female athletes. This research investigated correlations between absolute and relative lower-body strength with age, linear speed, lower-body power, and throwing and hitting velocity in high school girls softball athletes. Archival data collected from 34 high school girls softball players (age=14.91±1.00 years; height=1.66±0.07 m; body mass=63.21±9.59 kg) from a private strength and conditioning facility was analyzed. The data included: age, height, and body mass; 0-9.14 and 0-18.29 m sprint interval times; standing broad jump (SBJ) distance (lower-body power); batted ball exit (i.e., hitting) and throwing velocity; and absolute and relative three-repetition maximum (3RM) front squat and hexagonal bar deadlift (HBD). Pearson's correlations (p<0.05) derived relationships between absolute and relative strength with the fitness and sport-specific tests. The results indicated significant relationships between the 3RM HBD with age (r=0.389) and hitting velocity (r=0.418). The 3RM front squat related to the SBJ (r=0.422) and hitting velocity (r=0.457). Relative 3RM HBD correlated with the 0-18.29 m sprint interval (r=-0.349). These results suggested that a strength and conditioning program that improves the lower-body strength of high school girls softball players could contribute to faster sprinting speed, further horizontal jumps, and greater hitting velocity. The results from this study highlights the value of strength enhancement in high school girls softball athletes and provides support for strength and conditioning program provision for these individuals.

BACKGROUND: The practice of female genital mutilation (FGM) is a health and social problem. Millions of girls and women have undergone FGM or will soon, and more information is needed to effectively reduce the practice. The aim of this research is to provide an overview of the FGM trendlines, the inequality of its prevalence, and the economic burden. The findings shed light on 30-year trends and the impact of the pandemic on planned efforts to reduce FGM which helps with public health interventions. METHODS: Temporal trend analysis, and graphical analysis were used to assess the change and inequality over the last 30 years. We included 27 countries in which FGM is prevalent. We calculated the extra economic burden of delayed interventions to reduce FGM like COVID-19. RESULTS: For the 27 countries analyzed for temporal trendlines, 13 countries showed no change over time while 14 had decreasing trends. Among the 14, nine countries, Uganda, Togo, Ghana, Benin, Kenya, Nigeria, Central African Republic, Chad, and Ethiopia had high year-decrease (CAGR - 1.01 and - 10.26) while five, Côte d'Ivoire, Egypt, Gambia, Djibouti, and Mali had low year-decrease (CAGR>-1 and < 0). Among these five are the highest FGM prevalence similar distribution regardless the wealth quintiles or residence. There is an economic burden of delay or non-decline of FGM that could be averted. CONCLUSION: Findings indicate that some countries show a declining trend over time while others not. It can be observed that there is heterogeneity and homogeneity in the FGM prevalence within and between countries which may indicate inequality that deserves further investigation. There is considerable economic burden due to delays in the implementation of interventions to reduce or eliminate FGM. These insights can help in the preparation of public health interventions.

The aims of this study were to know the physical demands according to the playing position and team role, and to assess the effect of the body characteristics on the physical performance of semi-professional female soccer players. Forty-five female semi-professional soccer players during 9 home-matches of the 2021-2022 season were analyzed and GPS devices (GPEXE ®) were used. ANCOVA tests were performed with playing time as covariate. The results showed greater physical demands in forwards and wide-midfielders and offensive role players. Total distance, metabolic power, accelerations, deaccelerations, and distance covered to medium and high speed obtained a strong effect size in these analyses according to the playing position. Furthermore, relationships between body weight and physical performance were found (p < 0.05). In conclusion, the main finding of this study showed that semi-professional female soccer players compete differently, caused by differentiated functions, evidenced in the playing positions and role in the team. Offensive role, forwards and wide-midfielder female players performed the highest physical demands in the competition. This study has shown relevant information for coaches, S&C coaches, and training staff of the semi-professional female soccer teams in order to propose new keys and ways of planning training sessions.

BACKGROUND: Primary lymphoma of the female genital tract (PLFGT) is a rare malignant tumor in the female reproductive system, with a low incidence and few clinical reports. The aim of this study is to report our institutional experience with this rare malignancy and emphasize the need for increasing the awareness about PLFGT presenting with gynecologic symptoms. METHODS: The medical records of patients diagnosed with PLFGT from March 2014 to November 2022 in the First Affiliated Hospital of Wannan Medical College were reviewed. Histological classification and staging were based on the World Health Organization and Ann Arbor systems, respectively. RESULTS: There were 13 patients with diagnosis of PLFGT and the median length of follow-up was 31 months (0-102 months). The main clinical symptoms included postmenopausal vaginal bleeding, pelvic mass and abdominal pain. Serum LDH increased in 10 patients and serum CA125 elevated in 2 patients. The tumor of ovarian or uterine presented as solid masses in CT or MRI, and ascites was rare. The histological subtypes were diffuse large B-cell (n = 12) and follicular (n = 1) lymphoma. Tumors were located in ovary (n = 8), uterus (n = 3), and cervix (n = 2). According to the Ann Arbor staging system, 6 cases were classified as stage II and 7 cases were classified as stage IV, respectively. A total of 10 patients underwent surgery. Combination chemotherapy was used in 10 patients. Eight patients had tumor-free survival, 1 patient had recurrent disease, 3 patients died and 1 patient lost to follow-up. The median survival time was 32 months (1-102 months). CONCLUSION: PLFGT usually presents as gynecological symptoms and solid masses in pelvis. Surgery or biopsy was the way to obtain the pathologic diagnosis, and combination chemotherapy is the efficient method for PLFGT. Making an accurate preoperative diagnosis is of paramount importance to avoid radical gynecologic surgery.

Over the last 23 years, Russian President Vladimir Putin's autocracy has revealed a set of interlocking gender systems that have come to the fore particularly vividly since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022. How, this article asks, have the masculinist cultural and political practices of the Putin regime undermined democratic practices and engagement broadly speaking? How have they organized Russian state and society in ways that have led to today's war in Ukraine with its massive destruction, violence, and brutality? And have there been earlier signals that should have warned observers that this regime might undertake such a war of aggression? Drawing on public, mass media data, this article analyzes the gendered structures of power in Russia that have contributed to the degeneration of democracy in three main areas: (1) male-on-male domination in discourse and practice that supports Putin's personal rule and emasculates his enemies; (2) the elevation of male power clans, including the President's personal praetorian guard and the Russian private military companies; and (3) the overall taming and emasculation of the Russian Parliament combined with the elevation of tough women deputies, whom I call the Baba Commissars. These female MPs support the President's domination by creating an appearance of a threatening outside world that needs to be kept at bay. At the same time, they support a neo-traditional gender order with women managing the house under the direction of the patriarchal male leader.

Date palms are a vital part of oasis ecosystems and are an important source of income in arid and semi-arid areas. Crossbreeding is limited due to the long juvenile stage of date palms and their dioecious nature. The aim of this study was to create triploid date palms to obtain larger and seedless fruits and to increase resilience to abiotic stresses. A tetraploid date palm mutant was crossed with a diploid male palm, yielding hundreds of seeds suspected of containing triploid embryos. Six years after planting, four palms with confirmed triploidy reached maturity. They are phenotypically distinct from diploids, with a thicker rachis, thinner spines, wider and longer midleaf spines, and a longer apical spine. They were classified as sterile bisexual, sterile male and fertile female. One of the latter produced very tasty dates with a very small seed, which is promising for the marketability and profitability of date palm fruits. This first report on triploid date palms provides a way in which to make a significant leap forward in date palm breeding. Given the vigor and fruit quality of female triploid date palms, compared to their diploid counterparts, they will be the target of breeding programs and may spearhead new oases.

Bladder leiomyomas are uncommon benign soft tissue neoplasms of the bladder, frequently observed in women. Diagnosis often happens incidentally during ultrasonography, with symptoms varying based on tumour size and location. Here, we present a case of a 57-year-old woman with poorly controlled type 2 diabetes mellitus, successfully treated for bladder leiomyoma through transurethral resection and laparoscopic partial cystectomy. This case highlights the significance of early detection and timely intervention in optimizing patient outcomes for bladder leiomyoma.

Management strategies, ranging from conservative approaches to advanced reproductive technologies, are discussed in the context of individualized treatment plans based on the ASRM classification. The psychosocial impact of female genital tract anomalies is thoroughly examined, emphasizing the importance of holistic care and patient-centered approaches. Looking toward the future, the review outlines emerging research areas, including advances in diagnosis techniques, innovative treatment modalities, and genetic studies. It ultimately underscores the need for a comprehensive understanding of physical and psychosocial dimensions, offering insights for healthcare professionals to navigate this complex landscape and improve the lives of affected individuals.

Millions of women worldwide are infertile due to gynecological disorders, including premature ovarian insufficiency, polycystic ovary syndrome, Asherman syndrome, endometrial atrophy, and fallopian tube obstruction. These conditions frequently lead to infertility and have a substantial impact on the quality of life of the affected couples, primarily because of their psychological implications and high financial costs. Recently, using platelets to stimulate cell proliferation and tissue differentiation has emerged as a promising approach in regenerative medicine. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) shows considerable potential for promoting endometrial hypertrophy and follicle development, making it a promising therapeutic option for tissue repair or replacement. This review provides an overview of the recent advancements and underlying mechanisms of PRP therapy for various female reproductive diseases and presents new therapeutic options for addressing female infertility.

The nuclear transport of proteins plays an important role in mediating the transition from egg to embryo and distinct karyopherins have been implicated in this process. Here, we studied the impact of KPNA2 deficiency on preimplantation embryo development in mice. Loss of KPNA2 results in complete arrest at the 2cell stage and embryos exhibit the inability to activate their embryonic genome as well as a severely disturbed nuclear translocation of Nucleoplasmin 2. Our findings define KPNA2 as a new maternal effect gene.

BACKGROUND: It is still unknown whether the mechanisms proposed by the Reserve Capacity Model (RCM) explaining socio-economic health and wellbeing inequities in high income countries can be applied to low-income countries. This study investigates whether different reserve capacities (intra-, inter-personal, and tangible) can explain the association between relative socio-economic position (SEP) and wellbeing outcome measures among Ethiopian women working in Foreign Direct Investment (FDI). METHOD: Using a cross-sectional design, we collected quantitative survey data among 2,515 women working in the apparel and floriculture sectors in Ethiopia, measuring GHQ-12 mental health problems, multi-dimensional wellbeing, relative SEP, psychological capital (PsyCap), social support (emotional and financial social support network), and tangible assets (e.g., owning mobile phone, having access to toilet facilities). We used cluster-adjusted structural equation modelling to test whether PsyCap, social support, and/or tangible assets mediate the association between relative SEP (IV) and GHQ-12 mental health problems and multi-dimensional wellbeing (DVs). RESULTS: PsyCap and the size of the financial support network significantly mediate the socio-economic gradient in both wellbeing outcomes. The size of the emotional social support network shows no association with multi-dimensional wellbeing and shows an unexpected negative association with GHQ-12 mental health problems scores, including a significant mediation effect. Tangible assets show no association with the wellbeing outcome measures and do not mediate socio-economic mental health problems and wellbeing inequities. CONCLUSIONS: The RCM can be applied in low-income countries, although in unexpected ways. Similar to findings from high-income countries, PsyCap and size of the financial social support network show significant mediation effects in explaining mental health problems and wellbeing inequities in Ethiopia. These reserves could therefore serve as a buffer for socio-economic inequities in mental health and wellbeing and can therefore assist in decreasing these inequities for women working in FDI sectors in Ethiopia.

Background: The rating of perceived exertion (RPE) is a readily available and practical tool widely used in exercise science to monitor exercise load, but a rigorous review of the effect of menstrual cycle (MC) phases on RPE within continuous aerobic exercise has not yet been completed. Objective: This study investigated the effects of the MC phase on RPE during aerobic exercise. Study Design: This was a systematic review and meta-analysis. Methods: The search strategy was carried out using the 5 most common scientific databases. While qualitative analyses were performed in all included studies, random effects to standard mean difference were calculated and meta-analysis was performed where possible. This study addresses comparison for RPE at the beginning, middle, and end of the exercise adopting 2 mains analysis. The first adopted early cycle (first session of the cycle) as control compared with the subsequent phases, and the second adopted days 1 to 5 (early follicular) as control compared with the subsequent phases. Results: A total of 17 studies (n = 160) were included in the qualitative synthesis. The meta-analysis showed that MC phases did not impact RPE (P > .05). Conclusions: The current meta-analysis showed that MC does not impact RPE. Although acute RPE is not impacted by MC phases, future studies and practitioners should pay attention to the impact of RPE session by session throughout the MC.

Objective: To systematically evaluate and explore the factors influencing depressive symptoms in female breast cancer patients in China through meta-analysis. Methods: Relevant data were retrieved from cross-sectional studies or cohort studies on depressive symptoms of Chinese breast cancer within the following databases: PubMed, Embase, Cohrane Library, Web of 105 Science, Database of Medical Literature (CBM), Wan Fang Data, CNKI, and VIP databases. The literature screening, data extraction and literature quality evaluation were performed by two researchers by carefully reading the title, abstract and full text, and meta-analysis was performed using Stata 1.5 software after extracting relevant data. Results: Fourteen papers were finally included, with a cumulative total of 3,071 people surveyed, and a total of 1,298 breast cancer patients were detected with depression, with a detection rate of depressive symptoms of 42.26%; meta analysis showed that age less than 40 years old, unmarried, less than undergraduate education, monthly income <5,000 yuan, advanced breast cancer, radical breast cancer surgery, family history, living in rural areas, underlying disease stage and chemotherapy were associated with an increased incidence of depression in breast cancer patients. Conclusion: The detection rate of depressive symptoms in female breast cancer patients is high, and there is a need to strengthen depression-related psychological screening of breast cancer patients and provide them with individualized interventions to reduce the incidence of depression in breast cancer patients and to lower the level of depression already present in the patients.

Background and Aim: Migraine is a prevalent neurological disorder characterized by recurring episodes of debilitating headache accompanied by associated symptoms and sleep disorders. This study aims to investigate migraine-associated symptoms in female migraineurs within the Syrian population and the relation between migraines and sleep issues. Methods: A questionnaire-based cross-sectional observational study was conducted among the Syrian population. A total of 1009 women were enrolled in this study, including women without a history of migraine (Control group) and migraineurs (Case group) who had received a diagnosis of migraine from a hospital or private clinic. Data about migraine-related symptoms, including tingling, visual disturbances, Nausea/Vomiting, and epileptic seizures as well as sleep-related symptoms such as interrupted sleep, frequent awakenings, insomnia, snoring, and narcolepsy were gathered. Chi-square test was used to examine the relation between migraines and sleep issues. Results: A total of 1009 women were enrolled in this study including 531 migraineurs and 478 healthy women. The study revealed that the most commonly experienced symptoms during migraine attacks were nausea/vomiting and visual disturbances, followed by tingling. Total Unduplicated Reach and Frequency analysis showed that visual disturbances and nausea/vomiting were the two most frequent symptoms that co-occurred during migraine attacks. The study also demonstrated a significant relationship between snoring, insomnia, and narcolepsy with migraine (p = 0.038), with these sleep disorders being more prevalent among migraineurs. Conclusion: The findings indicate a significant association between migraines and sleep disorders, with migraineurs being at a significantly higher risk of experiencing poor sleep quality compared to healthy women. Addressing sleep disorders is crucial in managing patients with migraines. This study is the first of its kind in the Syrian population, providing valuable insights into the symptoms and sleep disorders associated with migraines in this population.
